Maximizing Environmental Benefits
Focus on choosing a variety of native species found in the area, functional landscape design and maintenance practices that support wildlife lifecycles.
Plant a variety of grasses
Support wildlife, birds, and pollinators with Colorado-friendly native grasses. Include a variety of grasses by using a mixture of species to add naturalistic beauty, color and texture.
Include taller grasses
Taller grass species like little bluestem, big bluestem, switchgrass can be included in a mix for more ecological value. Preserve seedheads for winter by not mowing in fall. Tailor maintenance practices to support birds and pollinators.
Add shrubs, forbs, and wildflowers
Add wildflowers or shrubs (potted plants or seeds) at time of grass seeding to benefit pollinators if broadleaf herbicides will not be broadcast across the site.
